Encouragement for Your Homeschool Journey

Hey homeschooling mama. Can we be honest here? There are good days, and there are not-so-good days.

I think subconsciously we want nothing more than to have it – and keep it – all together. Just do a quick Pinterest or Google search and you’ll find results (and some) that scream it.

The truth of the matter is homeschooling mamas already have so much pressure. The last thing we need is another added unexpected expectation, or another item added to the to-do list.

While all of that is on one end of the scale, there is something positive on the other end to balance it out. Just like every pregnancy is different, so is every family and how we decide to homeschool.

This is something worth shouting from the rooftops!

If you’ve been homeschooling any amount of time, then you know that each year, the doubts will arise. Questions being to flood our thoughts, and the process of rebooting starts all over again.

We have to learn to ignore the doubts and fears, not letting them have the final say in our journey.

Learning how to navigate the twists and turns of homeschooling isn’t always an easy task… and this is where a good dose of encouragement comes in.

Simply put, we need it. We need it more than we are willing to admit. And this, friend, is why I want to share three specific bit of encouragement with you.

I know what it’s like to feel like you are failing. I understand what the end of the rope feels like. And I sure as heck have seen what the end of the road looks like.

So here’s to encouraging you to keep going… no matter where you are in your journey.

My New Adventure…

If you follow me on social media, you have probably seen me post the excitement about a new opportunity to conveniently work from home and make $20 per hour teaching – both before my kiddos even get out of bed.

When I originally saw this opportunity on a job search website, I clicked on it… read about it… and then tossed the idea to the side. At the time, my brain couldn’t figure out how it would work so I dismissed the entire idea.

My husband was the one who brought it back up and encouraged me to really check it out to see if it was something I’d be interested in doing. At this time, we were also needing additional income, which my books and curriculum resources were lacking to bring in.

Needless to say, I revisited the website, read it in detail, and thought, “why not?” So I applied. Within in hours I received an email saying that they wanted me to do the interview (and demo). At that moment, I froze. I couldn’t believe the quick response, let alone the enthusiasm obviously felt through the acceptance email. Believe it or not, I put it off for days… almost weeks to be exact.

The emails kept coming and I kept clicking delete.

I honestly didn’t know why I was so resistant to this opportunity. The thought of failing? The thought of actually succeeding? Whatever it was, it had me clicking delete to every “we’d love to have you teach for us” email.

With a little more encouragement from my husband, I decided to go for it. I scheduled my interview and demo, but was still too chicken to do it “live”, so I opted for the recorded version. In the meantime, something clicked. It’s like I became excited at the thought of a new adventure as a teacher (beyond homeschooling and the brick and mortar classroom), working from home, and teaching Chinese kiddos ESL!

After recording my interview/demo, I received another email of congratulations and the invitation to go to the next step, which was to do what they call a Mock Class I. I wanted to run from this part because there was no way around meeting with someone live (a teacher-mentor), who would pretend to be a 5 year old Chinese child, and me pretending to be his/her teacher. I went ahead and scheduled the class so I wouldn’t be able to escape (again).

This part of the process turned out to be the funnest part for me (thanks, Lauren). Going into with with nerves bouncing all over the place, sweating in unseen areas, and shaking in my chair – it ended up being super relaxed, very helpful, and a huge encouragement to keep going. I still needed some work, so I had to schedule what’s called a Mock II Class. This just gave me more practice, more feedback, and more opportunity to get a feel of what it would be like to teach an actual Chinese child. Again, it was another incredible time (thanks, Michelle)!!

It became real once I received the last and final “congratulations, you are a VIPKID Teacehr email. I did it! I couldn’t believe it, but I did it! Within a week’s time I finished submitting all the necessary paperwork and signed my contract.

The new adventure was beginning. I don’t want to bore with ongoing details but what I will say is this job opportunity has been nothing but a blessing for me and my family.  It is everything it says and more. Yes, I work from the comfort of my own home. Yes, I actually do get to pick my own schedule. And yes, I make $20 per hour (pay is between $17-$22/hr).

The biggest reward is working with my Chinese students via a platform that even a child can figure out. I do not have to plan the curriculum or lesson plans, and anything I use that’s considered extra, I already own (thanks to being a homeschooling mom of three kiddos)! This opportunity has not cost me anything and the fact that I can work while my kiddos are asleep is everything!
