Facing a new school year brings mixed feelings for those of us with special needs children. In our minds, we think, “Will he finally learn to read this year? Now that he’s older, how many melt downs will I face each week? Will the other homeschooling moms accept me? Second year of high school. Hmm. Is she going to do the work or battle it out with me again?” 

And the one looming question, “Can I do this?”

Sometimes, that question hangs like a cloud on an almost daily basis. I know. With four special needs children — two with ADHD and two with Asperger’s — I have faced down that dark cloud many times. I’m right there with you, my friend. And, over time, it did get better. The cloud appeared less and less because I changed what I did.

I’ve learned a lot about what’s important and what’s not over the past 17 years. Through a lot of trial and error, I (mostly) figured out how to lay a foundation for success with my special kids.

It starts with three essential tips, tips that even today, I forget sometimes, especially with my fourth child. However, he’s old enough now to remind me of them, particularly tip number two.

You might think that these tips are academic and will ensure that your children will progress in skills and knowledge. Well, following these tips will certainly help with that, especially tips two and three. But, more importantly, they will bring peace and understanding to your home.
