Starting the Homeschool Journey: 3 Steps to Help You Get Started on the Right Foot

Whether you have freely chosen to homeschool or have been forced into it by circumstances and situations, getting started doesn’t have to seem impossible.

I vividly remember when my husband and I decided that we were going to homeschool our children. In my heart I knew we were making the right decision, but in my mind I wasn’t totally sure on how we were going to make it happen.

Being an ex brick and mortar school teacher I naturally had some ideas running through my head, but I quickly realized there was way more too it than that. Most homeschooling moms I’ve talked to will tell you that there are a few things they’d do differently in the beginning knowing what they know now – and I completely agree.

That’s why I want to share 3 steps to help you get started on the right foot:

Stick with you choice to homeschool.

Choosing to homeschool can be compared to something as major as buying a new home or car. It’s a total change in family dynamic, and it can often be frightening. Add to that the voices from people around you who attempt to come against your decision, and the limiting belief race starts. It happens to all of us.

When you feel the opposition, stick with your choice to homeschool by remembering why you are doing it.

Become familiar with your state’s laws.

Although the United States as a whole accepts homeschooling as a credible form of education, each state has specific requirements to meet for it to be considered ‘legal’. HSLDA is one of the best sites that offers detailed information on every state’s homeschooling requirements.

It may seem like a daunting task, however it is necessary to take all legal precautions when deciding to homeschool your children.

Cover your homeschooling journey in prayer.

When you’ve made the concrete decision to homeschool, most likely you’ve already sprinkled prayer on it. Keep in mind, though, that it doesn’t stop there. Prayer will sometimes be the only thing that will get you through your day. Prayer is used much more than just to bless your homeschool. Prayer can help you have discernment when difficult situations arise… gain wisdom in moments where knowledge isn’t enough… and help guide you in the seasons that aren’t so clear.

There is so much more I could share to help you start homeschooling with a bang but I don’t want to overwhelm you. Instead, I will give you some resources to check out at your convenience:
