There are hundreds of different languages spoken around the world, but wanna know the most common one sought after? ENGLISH. Yep, English! The English language is being taught and learned all over the world which means there is becoming a high demand for teachers to teach it… especially in China. But don’t worry, you don’t have to move there to teach it.
There is a new ESL (English as a Second Language) community on the rise who is offering part-time teaching opportunities with full-time benefits and fun! Founded in 2013 in Beijing (with an office in San Fransisco), VIPKID is a company/organization that provides the American Elementary School experience to children in China, all from the comfort of their own homes. It’s comforting to know that the founder is a former teacher!
What is our quest?
To create personalized, joyful education that inspires a love of learning in all students.
How does VIPKID help?
Simply put: everyone benefits! In China, the cost of a student learning English is about $88 per hour in an office setting. Through VIPKID, students are able to learn for just $36, which is a 60% discount! The average brick and mortar teacher income is estimated at $15per hour, while VIPKID teachers can earn up to $22 per hour!
Endorsed by companies such as Bloomberg and Forbes, VIPKID is headed to the top spot of best work from home companies to work for. Seeings how they are already at the #5 spot, it’s not too far away!
Making its name known in 32 countries so far, VIPKID has about 120,000 paying students (98.5% Chinese) and 12,000 teachers in the US and Canada.
VIPKID offers the flipped classroom approach with a before class activity that consists of introducing objectives through a video… one-on-one, live class time with unique VIPKID teachers… and homework through interactive practice activities, all auto graded.
Life as a Teacher
While you are in complete control of choosing your schedule, VIPKID offers a heads up on what is considered peak times to teach. These times are the main hours that parents are scheduling their children to work with teachers. Peak times range from weekdays 4am-8am and weekends 7pm-8am. There are occasions when other times are booked (during school breaks).
When it comes to pay, the lowest amount you can earn is $14 per hour, with the max being $22 per hour. This does not include bonuses and incentives that can be earned as well. You are paid monthly with no taxes withheld (because you are hired as an Independent Contractor). There is also a 6 month contract minimum.
When it comes to the lessons, there is NO lesson planning and grading! There is a mix of regular and new students, and you can take advantage of online workshops. Not to mention, there are tons of support groups that you can join!
Because this is an actual teaching position, there are a few requirements that must be met to be considered:
- 1 year teaching experience (yes, homeschooling counts)
- Bachelor’s Degree (doesn’t have to be in education field)
- Native North American Enlglish speaker (but you don’t have to live in N.A.)
- Reliable computer (desktop, laptop, notebook), webcam, and Internet
The application is completed in four easy steps:
- Application screening (easy peasy)
- Interview & Demo Class (can be done online with live people or recorded and submitted, see what I chose and why here)
- Teacher Prep Videos (which are ahh-mazing)
- Mock I & II class (don’t worry, these mentors are awesome and will help tons)
The demand to learn English is high; therefore, applications are accepted year-round and once you have made it through the process, you can begin working immediately!
