I’m sure you’re already familiar with the terms self-love and self-care, but why are they so difficult to walk out? I don’t claim to have a universal answer, but one thing I do know for sure is that it almost always involves how we truly see ourselves.
All too often we navigate our days through fake smiles and dreams un-chased. When in all actuality we are bombarded with constant thoughts of what needs to be done or who needs caring for. Day after day taking care of ourselves gets pushed further and further down the list.
Admitting the Truth
I for one will admit that I’ve traded in a cute outfit paired with a cute pair of heels for pajama pants and a baggy t-shirt. My go-to hairdo is a messy bun and a headband. It’s so bad that my children ask where I’m going if I put on a pair of jeans and a “nicer” shirt. Even if I wanted to go somewhere that didn’t consist of Aldi, Wal-Mart, Office Max, or the bank, best believe I’d feel guilty about it.
Yeah, cue the violin and cry me a river.
The truth behind it all is I don’t love myself enough to take care of me, or invest in me. If I did, there wouldn’t be thoughts of who I’m hurting or what I’m causing someone to miss out on. I’d schedule that spa day with confidence, knowing that it’s for my good and those around me. You see, the truth of the matter is that when we’re not operating as our best self or living life on purpose, we suffer. And even more, those around us suffer.
My children can’t understand the root of my snappiness, or the base of my bitterness. They just see a mommy who sometimes complains
a lot about wanting a break, or needing a moment to relax uninterrupted. They see me handling things completely opposite of how they should be handled. And that’s why I’ve made it a point to start loving myself. It’s time.

Yeah, there’s a process. It’s commonly called “mindset work” or “renewing your mind.” Either way you look at, that too has to be done. If not, it’s only a matter of time before limiting beliefs creep back in and coax you to believe that somehow you got it all wrong. And no, you don’t. You deserve to have a renewed mind. You deserve to live a meaningful life. You deserve to live unapologetically authentic. And you deserve to love yourself.
