There are so many fun ways to teach science while traveling. I’ve narrowed my list down to a few suggestions that can be implemented whether you are full-time traveling or taking a short vacation. These ideas are so fun, your kids won’t even realize they’re learning.
Fun Ways to Teach Science While Traveling
Take advantage of the great outdoors.
If you just so happen to find yourself at the beach, there are many things you can do to make science come alive. For example, you can create STEM challenges like:
- engineer a sand castle
- measure the tides
- learn about certain sea animals
- study seashells up close
- test shells to see which ones will sink or float
- test the salt water
This can also be switched up if you are visiting the mountains. Instead of the ocean, you can look for natural springs, animals (and insects) common to forest areas, and have fun with some dirt.
Use your mode of transportation.
In other words, you can use the way you travel to spark conversations about concepts such as aerodynamics, historical milestones, and how transportation has changed over time. Both science and technology can be touched on with this idea. You can also challenge your kids to tap into their creative innovation and discuss how something could possibly be made differently or better.
Visit science-based museums.
Even if you don’t find a science-based museum in the area you’re visiting, most museums at least have a science section. Depending on where you find yourself in the United States, some of the most popular are:
- Museum of Science (Boston)
- Museum of Science & Industry (Chicago)
- Center of Science & Industry (Ohio)
- Arkansas Museum of Discovery (Arkansas)
- Science Museum Oklahoma
