5 Back to Homeschool Field Trip Ideas
Starting a new homeschool year doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, not only should it be fun, but it should also mesh with your everyday lifestyle. If you’re looking for a bit of fun to kick off your new homeschool year, these field trip ideas are sure to do the trick!
Nature Exploration Day
You may be eager to hit the table and crack open the books, but taking learning outdoors is a unique way to combine fun and learning. There’s so much you can do during a nature exploration day, not to mention, so many subjects that can be checked off your school day list. Here are just a few ideas of things you can do for your day of exploring nature:
- Go for a hike at a local walking trail or national park.
- Visit a botanical garden (or greenhouse).
- Visit a local Amish farm.
- Take a scenic drive.
- Set up a picnic area and observe wildlife.
Pumpkin Patch and/or Apple Orchard
The fall season is typically prime time to visit pumpkin patches and apple orchards. The weather is usually perfect and most places have activities and events planned for visitors. In addition to visiting these places, extend the learning by having a few activities to do once you’ve picked pumpkins and/or apples.
- Decorate the pumpkins to make front porch decor.
- Use the pumpkins to create delicious desserts.
- Turn the apples into bird feeders.
- Cook the apples into sweet treats.
Museum Hopping
A lot of museums are free, take donations, or have educator discounts, which makes this a great way to include history into your schedule. You can visit your state museum, tour and old schoolhouse, visit an old battlefield, or visit an old church building.
Get Involved in Community Service
There are lots of opportunities to include community service. From visiting the police station and fire department to popping into the post office or the public library, these places often provide unique experiences to learn about the jobs people do and may even have things for you and your kids to do as well.
Other community service opportunities can be found at local food banks, food pantries, homeless shelters, and with organizations who have adopted streets and highways to be cleaned.
Park Gathering with Other Families
If you have a homeschooling community in your town, consider planning a park gathering with other families. It can be something as small as a back to homeschool potluck or a full out field day packed with games and activities.
