Whether you home educate your children on a traditional August to May basis or year-round, here are a few fun back to homeschool activities to kick off the new year. Each idea also comes with a free resource!
Psst… there’s a giveaway at the end of the post!
3 Fun Back to Homeschool Activities to Kick Off the New Year
1. Start your new homeschool year with Scripture and prayer.
If you’re a believing family like mine, then Scripture and prayer is the foundation of everything you do, including homeschooling. It took a few years for me to realize that teaching our children at “home” isn’t something separate but is actually a part of our new lifestyle.
So, even though reading the Word and praying may be a daily part of your lesson plans, it’s especially important to jumpstart your year with dedicated Scriptures and prayers.
Activity Suggestion: Find 5 Scriptures to declare and decree over you, your family, and your homeschooling journey. Use the Scriptures for memorization, copy work, and/or for prayers.
Free Back to Homeschool Scripture Coloring Pages
Start your new year strong with these Back to Homeschool Scripture Coloring Pages. They are perfect for mom and kids! Consider making them part of your morning routine, morning basket, or morning bible study.
There are pages with the following Scriptures on them:
- Proverbs 3:5-6
- Philippians 4:13
- Isaiah 30:21
- Philippians 4:6
- Joshua 1:9
- Proverbs 4:23
- James 1:5
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
- Psalm 20:4
- Isaiah 48:17
For each Scripture page, there is also a blank page for filling in your own.
2. Do a time capsule activity.
Time capsules are typically a “historic cache of goods or information, usually intended as a deliberate method of communication with future people, and to help future archaeologists, anthropologists, or historians.” For homeschoolers, we use time capsules to “capture” information and things that would be fun to revisit at the end of the homeschool year.
You can put a number of things into a “time capsule” at the beginning of the year and then extend the activity to include a report of what your child thinks will be different by the end of the year. It’s really neat to see just how much can change in such a short amount of time!

It’s also a unique way to coast into learning and allow for creative thought. Use my free printable pack below to add journaling to your new homeschool year.

Do you introduce a new year with fun back to homeschool activities?
Sometimes it’s hard to incorporate fun into homeschooling because it doesn’t quite feel like learning. However, as a veteran homeschooling mom, allow me the opportunity to tell you that learning can be and should be fun! In fact, that’s often when our children are learning the most. Don’t hesitate to plan for fun in your homeschool and don’t forget to download my resources above to help!
In the meantime, tell me how you kick off your new homeschool year. I’d love to hear form you!
